Emeritus Professor Judith Parker AM, RN, BA(Hons) Monash, PhD Monash, MD Honoris Causa Melbourne
Professor Judith Parker has played a major role in the development of nursing programs and research in the university sector in Australia.
She was the foundation Professor and Head of the School of Nursing at the University of Melbourne from 1996 to March 2004. Prior to that, she was foundation Professor and Head of the School of Nursing at La Trobe University.
Professor Parker initiated the establishment of two centres for nursing research at the University of Melbourne, both dedicated to conducting research leading to the improvement of clinical nursing practice. Under Professor Parker's leadership the School of Nursing obtained a large number of research grants, several of which Professor Parker has been actively involved in.
Professor Parker is internationally renowned for her research into the nursing handover, which was funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Large Grants Scheme. Her interest in clinical supervision builds upon the handover work.
Professor Parker established and was foundation editor and later editor in chief of the very successful and highly regarded international refereed scholarly journal Nursing Inquiry of which she is now Asia Pacific Editor.
She has also been involved in several international nursing education networks/ initiatives including the International Doctoral Education Network in Nursing (INDEN), the International Academic Nursing Alliance (IANA) and the international Universitas 21 network.
Professor Parker played a major role in the World Bank funded Sister School Project in Central Java, Indonesia. She is currently a principal investigator in the NHMRC funded Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Neurosciences, 2003-8.
In 2001 Professor Parker was included on the Victorian Honour Roll for Women and in 2002 she was made a Member of the General Division of the Order of Australia. In 2006 she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine in recognition of her contribution to nursing scholarship.
