Recognition of prior learning

Nursing recognises three main types of prior learning:

  • accredited postgraduate nursing studies

eg. certificate or diploma courses from a tertiary education institution

  • clinical training programs relevant to your chosen specialty from Nursing's register of recognised courses

eg. NWMH mental health graduate program

  • significant clinical experience in your chosen specialty

eg. endorsement as a Division 3 nurse

The University’s credit policy allows for students to receive credit for up to 50% of the course based on accredited postgraduate studies and up to 25% of the course based on clinical training and/or experience. However, each credit application is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To be awarded a qualification with a specialisation, credit must be:

  • in the same specialisation OR
  • you must provide evidence that assessment tasks completed in credited subjects were contextualised to the chosen specialty

Applying for recognition of prior learning

If you believe you are eligible for recognition of prior learning, please complete and submit a Credit Application Form with your course application. You must provide appropriate supporting documentation for your application such as transcripts and subject outlines including assessment details. In the case of clinical experience, you should provide a detailed resume, including training and performance development activities, and a recent performance appraisal.

Please note that supporting documentation may be provided at a later date if necessary, eg. transcripts for courses not available at the time of application. However, all study recognised as prior learning must be completed before you commence your University of Melbourne course.

Outcome notification

If your credit application is complete at the time of offer, you will be notified of the outcome in your offer letter.

If supporting documentation is to follow, you will be notified of the outcome of your application in writing when your supporting documentation is received and assessed.
